How to Choose a Professional Landscaper

The advice below applies to any company you talk to — including us. Hold everyone to it, and you'll never get burned.

The Checklist

Six Things to Verify Before You Sign

Verify license and insurance — with documents

Ask for the license number and current certificates of general liability and workers' comp. A legitimate contractor hands these over without flinching; we do.

Local address, local history

A company with a physical office and years of local yards will still exist when a warranted plant fails. Ask how long they've worked your parish — and check.

Beware the truck-and-trailer lowball

An unlicensed crew can mow cheap — until a rock through a window or an injured worker becomes your liability. If the price seems impossible, the insurance usually is too.

Get the warranty in writing — both of them

Plants should carry a replacement warranty; hardscape should carry a workmanship warranty. If either is vague or verbal, keep shopping.

Demand an itemized quote

Plants, materials, soil prep, labor, haul-off — line by line. A single lump-sum number hides everything you'd want to compare.

Check credentials, not just reviews

Horticulture training, irrigation licenses, and applicator certifications mean crews who know why plants live and die — things a star rating can't verify.

Straight Answers

Hiring Questions, Answered

Should I get multiple quotes?

Yes — and compare scope, not just price. The cheapest bid usually gets cheap somewhere you can't see: plant size, soil prep, or the crew itself.

Is a big deposit normal?

Modest material deposits are common on installs; large upfront payments are a red flag. Never pay in full before work starts.

What should I ask about the crew?

Employed or subcontracted? Trained in horticulture or just handed a trimmer? Who supervises on site? You're trusting these people on your property — it's fair to ask.

Hold us to every line of that checklist.
